Meat safety compromised by lack of staff

Tuesday 19 February 2008

Dutch consumers may be eating meat which is officially unfit for human consumption because the food safety inspectorate does not have enough money or staff to do its job properly, according to an official report.

The food safety inspectorate (VWA) report, which dates from October 2007, was passed on to consumer tv show Radar by the pro-animal PvdD party.

The report says that sick animals have to be destroyed on the farm and the carcasses taken to special disposal centres. But the organisation does not have enough manpower to monitor compliance and says supervision of the entire meat processing chain this year is being brought back to the minimum.

The VWA declined the tv show’s request to comment on the report
