Aruba: no action yet against Dutch student

Sunday 03 February 2008

The Aruban public prosecution department said it would wait until after Sunday’s television broadcast before deciding whether to take action against Dutch student Joran van der Sloot in connection with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, Dutch media reported on Saturday evening.

Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries claims to have solved the mystery of the American student’s disappearance on the island of Aruba in May 2005. The show will be broadcast tonight on SBS6.

On Friday evening Van der Sloot, who has been tape-recorded by secret camera confessing to disposing of the 18-year-old’s body, said that confession was a lie

According to news agency ANP, Van der Sloot admitted to tv chat show Pauw & Witteman that he had told a friend he and Natalee had sex on the beach. She became ill and died. He then called another friend who dumped her body at sea.

‘That is what I told him but it is not true and that is easy to prove,’ he said in the telephone interview. ‘It was stupid, stupid, stupid… No-one has any reason to believe me.’

De Vries told the Nova current affairs show on Saturday evening that the Aruban authorities did not know everything about his new evidence. ‘I do not have to report to them,’ he said.

De Vries also said he had paid the man who befriended Van der Sloot and secretly recorded his confession €25,000 over five months.
