No burqa ban in the Netherlands
Wednesday 23 January 2008
A general ban on burqas will not be implemented in the Netherlands because it would contradict freedom of religion laws, government sources told RTL news.
Instead, the the face-covering garment worn by fundamentalist Muslim women will be banned in schools and for civil servants, the sources said.
Ministers are expected to make an official decision on the burqua at next week's Friday cabinet meeting.
Right-wing opposition MPs have already called the decision 'disappointing' and say they plan to bring in their own draft legislation.
A maximum of 150 women in the Netherlands are thought to wear the burqa.
