Socialist Party membership doubles

Some 1,700 people left the Socialist Party in the first half of 2007 and 500 were take off the membership list for failing to pay their subscription, party secretary Hans van Heijningen told public broadcaster NOS on Friday.

The SP now has around 50,000 members, double the number it had seven years ago, he said.
