MPs want integration courses for PolesFriday 12 October 2007 A majority of MPs want Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians to follow compulsory integration courses, despite being members of the EU, the Volkskrant reports on Friday. The paper says new research shows immigration from the new EU member states will be more important than that from outside the EU. 'A modern Turk from Istanbul has to take an integration course but someone from rural Bulgaria does not. But the divide between the latter and Dutch society is far greater,' opposition Liberal (VVD) MP Halbe Zijlstra is quoted as saying. Two other opposition parties, the anti-immigration PVV and the Socialists, also support compulsory integration. 'We must not make new ghettos. The influx of immigrants from eastern Europe is an enormous problem which is totally under-estimated,' says Socialist MP Paul Ulenbelt. Coalition parties too say measures are needed to make sure this group of immigrants learn to speak Dutch and are integrated. Poles have been allowed to work in the Netherlands without legal restrictions since May this year and the same will apply for Bulgarians and Romanians from 2012. © DutchNews.nl
I hope as long as you are in the netherlands you must learn how to speak dutch langage. By chico | October 12, 2007 10:59 AM They can't handle the number of students required to take the course now. And problem is poorly run, poorly taught and a bureaucratic nightmare. Until they fix the program, they shouldn't even dream of adding more people to the waiting list. By Laura B | October 12, 2007 12:47 PM The inburgering law should be for all non Dutch nationals and not just non eu citizens. Otherwise the law makes no sense whatsoever. By sandra | October 12, 2007 2:34 PM You, my friends, are forgetting that it is not up to the Netherlands to decide this but that it stems from the legislation of European Union. All EU citizens have to be treated the same way - no exceptions. Holland had the veto right not to let Bulgary or Romania into EU. They did not exercise this right ... so their fault. And Sandra, since when does politics make any sense? By lol | October 12, 2007 2:35 PM Xenophobia at it's best !! Resistance is futile - you shall be assimilated by Dutch. If NL wants to stay in EU - then it has to treat all EU citizens equally. Alternatively, idiotic naturalization course should be compulsory only for immigrants applying for NL citizenship. And regarding the good understanding of English - dream on - as both posters are native Dutch speakers - quite obvious from their Dunglish :) By Patrick | October 12, 2007 3:47 PM In fact this is only another sign of racism against the eastern Europeans. The integration courses should be for all EU citizens or for no one. I thought that this racism against foreigners is only in companies like Philips but I realize right now that it is coming from the top politicians. By Oliver | October 8, 2009 11:28 AM

That is a good idea! It is ridiculous that people from outside of EU, especially western countries like USA, Canada and Australia are forced to take inburgering courses and then the Polish, Bulgarian and romanians do not. It makes no sense. Some can't even speak English while the Dutch understands English very well!
