Bos plans tax checks in 'problem' areas

Thursday 12 July 2007

Special teams from the tax office and labour inspectorate will make extra checks on people living in problem neighbourhoods to control whether they have paid their taxes, if a proposal by finance minister Wouter Bos is accepted.

According to ANP news agency, sources have confirmed that Bos wants to discuss the idea in the weekly cabinet meeting on Friday.

The special teams will control eight neighbourhoods in the coming three years and are expected to generate €40m in unpaid taxes a year.

Bos also has plans to tackle fraudulent property investments and hopes this campaign will make the treasury an extra €30m a year.

A further €10m is expected to be generated from cracking down on people who are working and claiming social security benefits at the same time.
