New animal species discovered in Suriname

Dutch and Surinamese scientists have discovered 24 new animal species in the eastern part of Suriname, including a fluorescent purple frog, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

The discoveries, due to be formally announced later on Monday, were made by two teams commissioned to explore the region by US group Conservation International.
In total, 467 species were catalogued, including panthers, pumas, various apes, amphibians, bats, birds and insects. The scientists were exploring in the Lely and Nassau mountains, where plans have been developed to mine for bauxite.
The Volkskrant said bauxite producers Billiton and Suralco, which have concessions to mine in the area, partly paid for the survey.
