‘Weapons embargo on China must stay’

The Christian Democrat (CDA) and Labour coalition parties want the European Union’s weapons embargo on China to remain in place. Earlier this month the International Affairs Advisory Council (AIV) called for the ban to be scrapped, saying it is blocking a more open relationship with China.

Labour MP Martijn van Dam told news agency ANP that his party is to press foreign affairs minister Maxime Verhagen (CDA) to speak out in favour of keeping the weapons embargo in place during his visit to China next week. According to Van Dam, China supplies weapons to the regimes in Sudan, Zimbabwe and Myanama.
The CDA says Van Dam’s request is in line with its own stance on the issue.
