Labour wants €1bn a year to develop clean energy

The Dutch Labour party (PvdA) wants to allocate one billion euros annually to develop clean energy, according to De Telegraaf website. Speaking at the opening of the academic year at Wageningen University yesterday, party leader Wouter Bos said he wants the Netherlands to be the cleanest and most efficient energy system in Europe by 2020 with dependence on fossil fuel reduced by 50 percent.

The money for making energy more environmentally friendly should come largely from the country’s natural gas reserve profits, said Bos.
He added that the accent should be on the innovation of new technology such as utilizing the point at which fresh and sea water meet (for example where the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea meet) to create electricity.
The research institute Wetsus in Leeuwarden is pioneering this technique which could eventually generate 7,500MW of electricity, said Bos.
