The arrival of Netflix and the takeover of Videoland by broadcaster RTL means competition in the video on demand market in the Netherlands is heating up.

According to the Volkskrant, some two million people in the Netherlands currently use video on demand services, generating turnover of €72m last year. But that, according to a recent PwC report, is due to explode, generating upwards of €206m by 2017.

By contrast, the number of video rental outlets in the Netherlands has fallen from 1,300 to just 300 over the past 10 years.

US market

Nevertheless, this is still minute when compared with the US market, where 30 million people alone have a subscription to Netflix and 29 million to HBO.

Netflix – launched on September 11.

Streaming service for pcs, smart phones and tablets. Fee of €8 a month, giving users the choice of a large number of films and television series, including House of Cards.

Videoland/RTL – current major Dutch market player

Films can currently be rented for between 50 cents and €4.99 but RTL is planning to introduce a monthly fee of around €10 of unlimited films and series. Includes popular Dutch series such as Baantjer and Gooische Vrouwen

Pathe Thuis – films only

Direct streaming and can be viewed via intert, smart phone apps and some smart tvs. Recent films at €5, older films from €3

iTunes

Has around 1,500 films in Dutch or with Dutch subtitles. Prices range from 99 cents to €4.99 for new releases. Films can be viewed via computer, iphones and ipads or television with the aid of Apple TV.

Ximon

Dutch video site with 700 (art house) film titles. A joint venture between the Dutch film producers association, EYE film house and Dutch film institute. Older releases cost €1.50, new films €4.95. Ximon also has monthly subscriptions from €10.

Cinemalink

Blockbusters and arthouse films, including a large French selection. Works via website. Films cost from €3.95.

HBO Nederland

HBO on Demand is part of the HBO television subscription, offering a limited range of television series and older films week by week. Different television providers determine what services to place on their platform.

KIJK

Video on demand platform from broadcaster SBS (includes Veamer and SBS Gemist with all content from SBS6, Net5 and Veronica). Programmes need to be downloaded first and watched online.

Uitzending Gemist

The catch up service for missed programmes offered by the public broadcasters. Live streaming and free

Cable firms

Cable firms KPN and Ziggo also offer on-demand films for varying fees
