Dual nationality

The Volkskrant today looks at the way dual nationality is viewed in other countries, ahead of Thursday’s parliamentary debate on the issue. The debate will centre on two ministers in the new cabinet – one who is Moroccan as well as Dutch and the other, Turkish.

In both Turkey and Morocco parliamentarians are allowed to dual nationality, the paper says. No other country in Europe is as obsessed with passports as anti-immigration party leader Geert Wilders, the Volkskrant points out.
In the UK and Belgium, dual nationality is not an issue. In France, the equal opportunities minister is both French and Algerian. And even the Dutch queen has the right to a British passport, says migration law professor Ulli d’Oliveira.
As a descendent of Sophia of Hannover, Beatrix has a right to be British under a law dating from 1705. She could have been German too. But Beatrix’s father Bernhard had to renounce his German nationality before marrying Queen Juliana.
