What does friendship really mean? How would you describe it? And if you had to write about it what would you say?

This is exactly what the winners and runners-up of the Young Writers Competition have done in this collection of short stories and poems submitted by international school children throughout the Netherlands.

Pupils from seven to seventeen documented their innermost feelings about the meaning of friendship, much-loved chums and absent friends in this touching compilation by talented young writers.

It’s easy to think of international school children and young expats living privileged and sheltered lives, but the downside can be a nomadic, unsettled existence where friendships are all too often transient and difficult to maintain.

Especially poignant are the accounts of coming to terms with losing friends through moving countries or even in death, and what shines through is an almost adult maturity and optimistic belief that while some friendships just cannot last, others will sustain us from afar in the good times and the bad.

Friendship is an uplifting and engaging little book for junior expats everywhere, and a comforting reading companion for any youngster about to embark on a new life abroad.
