The police handed out far more fines last year to road users who were using a mobile phone last year than in 2021. In total, almost 180,000 drivers and cyclists were penalized for dealing with calls and whatsapps without having hands-free apparatus, according to new figures released on Monday.

The increase follows the introduction of a new viaduct camera in July 2021 which leads to an automatic fine of between €360 and €150 for using the roads while holding a phone.

In addition, the police are using ‘other methods’ such as high buses which enable officials to see what drivers are doing, police spokesman Paul Broer warned.

In total, over 115,500 drivers and 53,200 cyclists were fined for using a phone last year, compared with 85,300 and 46,300 respectively in 2021. The number of people fined who were phoning while using ‘other vehicles’, excluding motorbikes and invalidity scooters, rose from 29 to 427.

The true total is likely to be higher because council wardens also have the power to issue fines for simple traffic infringements, the police said.

The government has decided to put up traffic fines 10% next year.
