Spanish emergency service workers have rescued a group of 120 Dutch school pupils and 20 teachers who got into trouble during a storm while walking along a trail in hills near Girona on Sunday afternoon.

The group was walking from the Sant Eudald de Jou hermitage to Pont de Llierca, a 28-metre high bridge, when the weather suddenly turned and the temperature dropped. The group managed to find shelter from the hail and very strong winds but was unable to find the way back to the path.

The fire brigade were alerted and sent seven trucks and a helicopter in to bring the group to safety. Spanish weather forecasters had activated a severe weather warning for the La Garrotxa region where the group was camping.

According to Spanish media reports the group are in good health although one had mild hypothermia and another a foot injury. Several had been bruised by the hail.
According to the AD, the teenagers and their teachers were from the Zandvliet Christian high school in The Hague.
