Overnight snow has caused major problems on the roads in the south of the country, particularly on the A2 motorway around Eindhoven, motoring organisation ANWB reported on Thursday morning.

The KNMI weather bureau had issued a code yellow weather warning for the south, saying the snow would cause slippery driving conditions in Noord-Brabant and Limburg in particular.

Several centimetres of snow has fallen in the south, and the KNMI says more is to come during the day in the south and east. There could also be more problems on the roads overnight as the temperature drops to below freezing again.

Thursday’s rush hour, which led to jams totaling 700 kilometres shortly before 8am, was particularly busy in the south because of the strike by regional transport workers.

More snow is expected on Friday, but the weekend will be dry with sunny spells.
