Greenhouse gas emissions fell by 9% in the second quarter of this year, when compared with the same period in 2021, national statistics agency CBS said on Wednesday.

The drop was largely due to a reduction in gas use by industry, farming and families, the CBS said. The trend was already apparent in the first three months of the year as high gas prices and a warm spring reduced gas use across almost all sectors.

In particular, emissions by industry were down 6%, even though the economy grew by 5.3% over the same period, the CBS said.

However, the transport sector was responsible for a 22% increase in carbon dioxide emissions, due in part to recovery in the airline industry.
