Fledgling political party Volt, which won three seats in parliament at the March 2021 general election, has expelled its number two Nilüfer Gündogan.

The party says her position has become untenable after 13 formal complaints were made about her and that she refused to cooperate with an inquiry.

The complaints against her range from physical violence to unwanted sexual advances and abuse of power, party officials said at the weekend.

Gündogan has described the decision as ‘slander and defamation’ and has called in a lawyer to make a formal complaint. She has said she will keep her seat in parliament.

Gündoğan, 45, focuses on defence, finance and education in parliament and has had regular run-ins with MPs for the far right Forum voor Democratie. She recently spoke to current affairs show Nieuwsuur about the impact of the threats she gets on social media on her life.
