Many supermarket chains are still not charging deposit fees on plastic bottles nearly five months after they became obligatory by law.

A survey by consumer affairs show Kassa found that retailers including Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl and Coop were not applying the charge on several products, including own-brand labels.

The environmental inspection agency ILT said it would investigate whether the law had been breached after receiving an enforcement request from Recycling Network.

Since July 1 shops have had to charge a 15 cent deposit on all plastic bottles larger than 750ml, and refund it on empty bottles. There is an exemption for pure fruit juice, but not for juice drinks with added water or sugar.

GroenLinks has called for the exemption for fruit juice to be scrapped to avoid confusion among retailers.

Jumbo told Kassa it believed it complied with the law, but would wait for the outcome of the ILT’s investigation.
