Local parties came out top in three of the four local elections which took place this week, following boundary changes.

In total, 250,000 people were eligible to vote in the four new municipalities of Land van Cuijk, Maashorst, Purmerend and Dijk en Waard but turnout was low in all four.

In Land van Cuijk, a new combination of six towns and villages including Boxmeer, the Christian Democrats emerged as the biggest party, followed by two local groups. The party is struggling in the national polls.

In Maashorst, Purmerend and Dijk en Waard, local parties won the biggest share of the vote.

The rest of the Netherlands will vote for new local councils on March 16, 2022.
