The number of people using the CoronaMelder app, which warns if they have been in close contact with someone who has coronavirus, has plunged since the beginning of the year, website Nu.nl reported on Tuesday.

The number of users has gone down from 2.9 million to 2.4 million since the curfew was cancelled in May, Nu.nl said.

During the lockdown, around 12% of people who were diagnosed with coronavirus allowed others to be alerted via the app, but that has now gone down to 6.5%.

Nevertheless, the app still leads to people without symptoms discovering that they do have coronavirus, Nu.nl said.

‘It is important to get a test if you get a report that you have been close to an infected person,’ Utrecht epidemiologist Carl Moons told the website. ‘Even if you have been vaccinated, you can still be carrying the virus and passing it on.’
