The two men wanted in connection with an attack on a police officer in Groningen last week have been arrested in northern France, police said on Saturday.

One is a 20-year-old man from Oldambt in Groningen province, the other a 32-year-old American national of no fixed address, police said.

The men were caught on surveillance camera in the vicinity of the attack, both riding bikes. They attacked the police officer when he stopped to question them for being out after curfew. One of them stabbed him several times in the face and neck with a sharp object.

Police were able to identify the men from tip-offs which led them to a house boat in Groningen itself, RTV Nord reporter Jeroen Willems said. One of the men had also left his distinctive cap on the streets and both had left their bikes.

The policeman remains in hospital, having lost a lot of blood, but his injuries are not life threatening. The other police officer was wounded in the leg.

The Dutch public prosecution department has now begun extradition procedures to have the men returned to the Netherlands.
