The Dutch football association KNVB is consulting clubs from the two professional leagues on Friday afternoon about how to end the season following the government’s decision to extend the ban on organised events to September at least.

At stake are two places in the Champions League and three in the Europa League, all of which mean big money for the clubs involved.

European football body Uefa said on Thursday that places must be allocated depending on sporting merit. This would mean direct placement in the Champions League for Amsterdam football club Ajax, which currently leads the Eredivisie on goal difference.

AZ of Alkmaar, level on points with Ajax, would join round two of the preliminary Champions League competition.

PSV Eindhoven and Rotterdam club Feyenoord will take part in the Europa League. The third Europa League place would go to Willem II on merit, but Utrecht, is three points behind the Tilburg side with one game in hand.

Utrecht is also a finalist in this year’s now abandoned KNVB Cup competition, which would have also entitled the club to a European place.

The KNVB must also decide whether clubs should be relegated or promoted this season.  Ado Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk would both go down to the first division if the KNVB decides to go for that option. Ado has already said it will bring in the lawyers if demoted.
