Storm in a beer glass? Heineken infringes on tequila trademark, says lobby group

The Tequila Regulatory Council, a trade group of Mexican tequila producers, is threatening to sue Amsterdam-based brewer Heineken over its tequila-inspired Desperado beer brand, the Financieele Dagblad said on Monday.

The TRC says Heineken cannot claim on Desperados labels that it has a tequila taste when there is no tequila in it. In addition, tequila is a protected name like champagne or cognac, the organisation says.

Heineken, for its part, says the tequila flavouring comes from a TRC member and the company complies with all the rules and labeling requirements.

The beer was first launched in 2014.
