Dutch snack bars lose ground to foreign fast food firms

The traditional Dutch snack bar is losing in popularity to foreign fast food chains, the Telegraaf said on Thursday.

The Netherlands currently has some 4,800 snack bars, a drop of 4% on 10 years ago, the paper said, quoting figures from hospitality advice bureau Van Spronsen & Partners.

At the same time, the number of fast food outlets, such as Burger King, is rising – the increase reached 7% over the past five years and some 11% since 2006.

The report shows the Netherlands has almost three snack bars per 10,000 inhabitants but this rises to 4.7% in the southern province of Limburg.
