Sjinkie Knegt wins first Olympic short track medal for Oranje

Sjinkie Knegt has become the first Dutch national to win an Olympic medal in short track speed skating, taking bronze in the 1,000 metres.

The Frisian had been eliminated after ending third in his semi-final but was added to the final line-up after judges said South Korean skater Lee Han-bin had cut him off early in the race.

Gold in the 1,000m went to Viktor An of Russia. Vladimir Grigorev took silver. Knegt’s bronze is the first medal for the Dutch outside the long track speed skating events, which Oranje is dominating.

Earlier in the day, Jorien ter Mors was fourth in the final of the women’s 1,500m short track.
