Some 80% of the 13,000 homes in Amsterdam shared by three or more adults do not meet planned new council rules on multiple occupancies, the Parool reports on Monday.

On Wednesday, the city council will vote on rules to allow three or more adults to share properties bigger than 60 square metres.

Thousands of people in the capital share a house or flat with two or more friends or fellow students, but this is technically illegal.

For example, nearly every property in the popular Amsterdam district De Pijp is smaller than 60 square metres, according to estimates from property management group Beheer Amsterdam and quoted by the Parool.
