Relatives given more say in ‘opt out’ donor registration plan

The Liberal democratic party D66 has amended its draft legislation to introduce an opt-out organ donor register to take the wishes of relatives more into account.

The draft bill was drawn up by MP Pia Dijkstra but was criticised by the government’s Council of State advisory body for infringing people’s right to self-determination.

The bill has now been changed to stop organs being harvested automatically if relatives can prove the deceased opposed donation, according to media reports this week.

Letters

The primary focus of the bill is that people are automatically included in the register if they do not react to letters asking them if they have objections.

It is not clear from the media reports when the bill will be discussed in parliament.
