Double Dutch in European women’s speed skating championships

Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst has retained her European all-round title at the European championships in Hamar, Norway.

Wüst also took the title in 2008 and 2013. Her Dutch team mate Yvonne Nauta took silver and the Czech Republic’s Martina Sáblíková won bronze. The other Dutch women, Diane Valkenburg and Marije Joling, were fourth and eighth.

The all-round title for women consists of races over 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 3,000 metres.

After the event Wüst said she has never skated better. ‘I have had a fantastic European championship,’ she told Nos television. ‘Everything worked, everything was in balance. I now have to remain relaxed and hope I can take this confidence with me to [the winter Olympics in] Sochi.’
