KPN works council urges government to halt América Móvil takeover

The works council at telecoms group KPN has urged ministers and parliament to use their influence to stop the takeover by Mexican company América Móvil.

In an open letter to politicians, the works council says it is concerned that the takeover will threaten the company’s future, the quality of its service and will lead to job losses.

The council wants the government to use its influence to try to stop the takeover, if necessary using legislation.

Former monopoly

América Móvil launched a €2.40 per share offer for former state monopoly KPN at the beginning of August.

Earlier this week, América Móvil had had talks with economic affairs minister Henk Kamp and the unions. Kamp said the talks were useful but declined to go into details.

The cabinet continues to monitor events closely, the minister said.
