Way cleared for end to national Sunday shopping regulation

The senate on Tuesday voted in favour of a new law which allows local authorities to decide whether or not to sanction Sunday shopping.

At the moment, towns and villages not considered ‘tourist attractions’ are restricted to 12 Sunday openings a year.

The new rules, which end years of debate, were opposed by the small religious parties, the Socialists and two Christian Democrat senators.
