Justice minister Ivo Opstelten is to take steps to make it easier to file a police report and ensure police keep crime victims up-to-date with progress on their cases.

A recent report by justice ministry inspectors highlighted major shortcomings in police performance and showed wide variations between the performance of different forces.
The creation of a single national police force will eradicate some of the problems, Opstelten told MPs in a briefing. The replacement of the 22 regional forces by one national body is due to become a reality on January 1.
In addition, the minister wants to ensure people who are the victims of a burglary are told what is happening to their case within two weeks from next year. Muggings will follow in 2014, he said.
Reports will no longer need to be filed in the locality of the crime and the police will visit victims at home to take statements about difficult crimes such as rape, the minister said.
People will also be able to make more reports by telephone and internet.
