Tougher rules for owning a gun

People who apply for a weapons licence from next year will have to fill in an online test and provide the names of three referees for character checks, the Nederlands Dagblad reports on Wednesday.

The aim of the test is to assess whether the person is psychologically stable, the paper said.
Justice minister Ivo Opstelten said earlier he planned to introduce new rules following last year’s supermarket shooting in Alphen aan den Rijn in which seven people died.
The official report into the shooting said police made a serious mistake in granting a gun licence to Tristan van der Vlis, who had spent time in a psychiatric hospital.
