Property tax rises over 5% in many council areas

Property tax (ozb) has risen by more than 5% in 227 councils this year, according to figures from the central statistics office CBS.

Just three councils have lowered property taxes: The Hague, Anna Paulowna and Lopik. The biggest increase is in Lingewaard with a hike of 60%.
The rise in the other main cities is relatively low, says the CBS. Amsterdam and Rotterdam saw an increase of 2.5% and Utrecht 1.6%.
The amount of property tax levied varies according to the value of the houses. ‘A council with a lot of expensive houses can collect a reasonable income from a low tax, but when house prices fall, the tax goes up to compensate,’ says the CBS.
The highest tax rate is in Appingedam where property tax is five times as high as on the island of Texel for a house of the same value.
