Bigger role for victims of crime: minister

Victims of crime will have a bigger say in their cases if the liberal VVD and Labour (PvdA) form the next coalition government, junior justice minister Fred Teeven said during a book presentation on Tuesday evening.

At the moment, victims are allowed to speak in court but only about the consequences for them of a crime.
The new plan, which Teeven says is on the table during the coalition negotiations, will allow victims to have a say in the charges brought and the sentence given.
Teeven, speaking in his caretaker capacity, said both parties have a greater role for victims in their election manifestos, so an agreement is highly likely, reports Nos television.
