Senior legal official backs televising high-profile murder trials

A senior legal official has suggested high-profile court cases should be broadcast on television or internet in order to boost understanding of the way the legal system works.

Erik van den Emster who chairs the law council Raad voor de Rechtspraak, told the AD trials relating to cases which had caused widespread public discussion could be broadcast. This would include murder trials, he said.
‘The idea is that people would see what we do and why we do it,’ he told the AD. ‘It would increase understanding of our jobs.
The council is to begin experimenting with internet broadcasts next year, the paper said.
The trial of MP Geert Wilders on charges of inciting hatred and discrimination was broadcast on television because of the public interest in the case.
