Ministers to get tough on ‘work-shy’ welfare claimants

Social affairs minister Henk Kamp is working on draft legislation to get tough on welfare benefit claimants (bijstand) who don’t try to find a job, he told MPs in a briefing on Monday.

Only around half of the people claiming welfare benefits feel the pressure to try to find a job and ‘this is unacceptable,’ Kamp is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
The legislation will detail how local councils should encourage claimants to find work and will also standardise procedures.
The new rules mean that someone could face a cut in benefits if they are not prepared to travel long distances. Kamp came under fire last year for saying benefit claimants could be forced to move house to find work.
