Medical specialist pay rises 9%

The pay of medical specialists rose an average of 9% last year, not 20% as claimed by health minister Ab Klink, the specialists’ association has told news agency ANP.

And the increase is almost entirely due to pay rises for support specialists such as microbiologists and radiologists, the association said. ‘Ordinary’ specialists have seen their pay rise by an average of 1%, it claims.
The association bases its claims on a survey of 33 of the Netherlands’ 84 hospitals.
ANP reports that Klink is sticking with his original claim that the total specialists’ wage bill has gone up by €400m a year, or 20%. The increase is due to the introduction of dbcs – a complicated system of breaking down a course of medical treatment into individual steps, each with their own fee.
