World War II resistance group disbands

The association of former World War II resistance fighters has decided to disband next June, 65 years after the war ended, Trouw reports on Friday.

‘We must be pleased that we have been able to take this decision in a responsible manner,’ chairman Wim de Bruijn (87) told the paper. ‘If we had not done so, the NFR would have died a quiet death and that would not have been decent.’
The organisation, which once had thousands of members, now has just 400. Some 20% of its members have died over the past three years.
After the war, the NFR had an important role on advising the government what to do with collaborators, and commemorating the liberation of the Netherlands on May 5, the paper says.
