War criminal Bikker is dead and buried

Dutch war criminal Herbertus Bikker died at his home in Germany and was buried last November, De Pers newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Bikker, known as the Hangman of Ommen, was sentenced to life in jail after the war. In 1952 he and several other convicted nazis – including Klaas-Carel Faber – escaped from prison in Breda and fled to Germany.
An attempt to try him there in 2003 failed after he claimed diminished responsibility due to illness.
Bikker was a member of the SS and was therefore automatically granted German nationality in 1943. He was never deported back to the Netherlands because Germany does not deport its own nationals.
