One in five deportations is cancelled

The deportation of more than 1,000 illegal immigrants was cancelled at the last minute last year, amounting to around 20% of the total, according to the CITT, the body in charge of supervising deportation policy.

CITT chairman Hans Gualtherie told Trouw too many flights are cancelled because the paperwork is not in order or because illegal immigrants arrive too late at the departure gate.
He called on the foreign affairs ministry to increase the pressure on foreign embassies to supply proper documents to illegal immigrants scheduled for deportation.
