‘Juvenile deliquents need a girlfriend’

The nuisance caused by youths hanging around on street corners would be solved if more of them had girlfriends, according to the mayor of the village of Zuidland just south of Rotterdam.

The village, with a population of 5,200, is home to a large group of disaffected youngsters who hang around drinking and damaging property. During the New Year celebrations, riot police had to break up a gang of 150 youths who were throwing fireworks and fighting.
But mayor Pauline Bouvy-Koene told regional tv station RTV Rijnmond that the trouble might stop if the lads got girlfriends. ‘Girls have a good influence on boys,’ she said.
However, the council has no plans to set up its own dating agency, the Telegraaf quotes her as saying.
