AZ clinch football title after Ajax defeat

AZ Alkmaar are national football premier league champions after Amsterdam’s Ajax were soundly beaten by last season’s cup holders PSV of Eindhoven on Sunday.

With an 11-point lead and only three games to go to the end of the season, AZ can now not be overtaken. It is the club’s first league title in 28 years.
After failing to clinch the championship on Saturday – AZ was beaten 2-1 by Arnhem’s Vitesse – nerves were on edge as the team waited for the results of the match between Ajax and PSV on Sunday which would decide their fate.
But PSV thrashed the Amsterdam side 6-2, giving AZ the result they needed.
The victory comes as a great relief for AZ, which two years ago let the championship slip out of their hands in the last game of the season.
Over the past few years AZ has emerged as a serious challenger to the premier league’s big three clubs, Ajax, PSV and Rotterdam’s Feyenoord.
This has been largely due to the work of the club’s internationally renowned manager Louis van Gaal and the investment in a new stadium by the club’s sponsor DSB bank.
