Animal groups protest at pig transports

Piglets being transported from the Netherlands to factory farms in southern Europe are often dying en route because of the lack of food and water and cramped conditions, animal welfare groups say in today’s AD.

The groups – Varkens in Nood and Dier en Recht – followed a transport of 972 piglets to Spain last week. On arrival, 13 pigs were dead and a further 20 died soon afterwards. The groups claim the animals were without water.
The farmer denies the animals had no water and blames the animal rights activists for the deaths by causing stress.
Some 10 lorries laden with pigs cross the border every day. Government inspectors found 429 infringements of the law relating to pig shipments last year.
