KPN cuts prices in fight for digital tv viewer

KPN has slashed the price of its Digitenne digital tv system by 30% in an effort to get more users.

The price cut means viewers can get 23 television and 19 radio stations for just €6.95 – around half the fee charged by most cable providers.
‘At the moment, consumers think they are missing something because Digitenne has fewer channels than cable,’ Ed Achterberg of research group Telecompaper told the Volkskrant. ‘But if you can provide a saving up to €170 a year, then you should have the advantage.’ He also points out that people only tend to watch a handful of stations.
KPN is benefiting from the shift to digital broadcasting – some 30% of the Netherlands’ seven million households have made the switch. But there is another reason why KPN’s ‘cable killer’ is being ignored, Achterberg says. It does not offer BBC1 or BBC2.
