38,000 start Vierdaagse four-day walk

Over 38,000 people are expected to start the annual Vierdaagse four-day walk in Nijmegen on Tuesday, some 6,000 fewer than last year. The AD newspaper reports that plain clothes US secret service officials are taking part in the march to keep an eye on American soldiers who are also involved.

The four-day march was originally a military exercise and many soldiers still take part today. This year 4,600 soldiers from 17 countries are participating, including 936 Britons and 65 Americans, reports AD.
The paper claims Dutch authorties have turned a blind eye to the fact that armed CIA officers are on the march to guard the US soldiers.
