Maths failed by 25% of trainee teachers

A quarter of first-year students at primary school teacher training colleges (pabo) have to quit because their arithmetic skills are not up to scratch.

Around half the students failed the test at the beginning of this academic year, and of them, 50% have still not made the grade, despite extra teaching, the HBO college council said.
Chairman Doekle Terpstra said the results, while ‘dramatic’, showed that investment was being made in the quality of teaching staff.
