Dutchman sentenced to death for drugs

The Indonesian high court has sentenced a 61-year-old Dutchman to death for his role in running a drugs factory close to Jakarta, ANP reports on Wednesday. The man, from Amsterdam, was earlier sentenced to life imprisonment but that has been increased on appeal.

A spokesman for the foreign affairs ministry said the minstry had not yet been formally told about the new sentence but would make its opposition to the death penalty known.
Another Dutchman is also currently on death row in Indonesia. In 1994 Singapore hung convicted drug smuggler Dutch national Johannes van Damme.
