8,500 kgs fireworks seized

Police in Rotterdam and Ridderkerk have uncovered a cache containing 8,500 kg of fireworks. The fireworks were being kept in a lock up and in a private home.

Every year in the run up to the New Year celebrations, Dutch police make dozens of arrests and seize thousands of kilos of illegal fireworks under the fireworks legislation.
This states that fireworks may only be sold to the public from licenced locations on a couple of days prior to December 31. If you want to buy fireworks at any other time of the year, you need a special licence. Importing them from Belgium, as everyone does, is illegal.
