Politicians don’t listen, poll concludes

An online poll of over 170,000 people has shown broad support for a wide range of social and economic reforms – even though half still don’t know who to vote for in the forthcoming general election.

Some 60% back scrapping mortgage tax relief – a political hot potato that only Labour want to tackle in their manifesto. Just over half support moves to make it easier to sack staff – as long as employers do more to retrain affected workers, a move the Christian Democrats plan to make in the next cabinet. And 70% say they believe the Netherlands should undertake further social and economic reforms.
The 21minuten poll, the biggest online testing of Dutch opinion yet, was carried out over the past six weeks; with the results adjusted to take into account the unrepresentative nature of internet polling.
The poll also covered people’s hopes and desires for Dutch society. While 90% said they wanted a society in which people supported each other – and in which modesty and quality were central – only 9% said they believed Dutch society was one based on solidarity. And only 6% thought politicians were actually listening to the man in the street.
