National prize for the app that shows you the nearest toilet
Friday 27 January 2012

A smartphone application which shows users where the nearest public toilet is has won the public's prize for best government-information app of the year in a new competition.

The app, named hogenood (desperate need), was designed by a group of management students and won the most votes from the online public.

Winner of the main jury prize is Vistory, which shows the user old photographs and film of their current location. The app is not only educational, but will be really useful to tourists as well, the jury said.

The competition was set up to design apps using government information. Economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said he hoped the competition would encourage more and better use of official information 'of which as much as possible is available free of charge'.
